Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia became a Mecca for Juggalos across the city as Insane Clown Posse played their trademark horrorcore hip-hop on Thursday, October 22nd. The night celebrated individuality, outrageous energy and celebrated the fiercely loyal community that has kept the dark carnival going for decades.

Wakko the Kidd got things going early on with his high impact, energetic rap beats. Second act Tierre Diaz added another layer to the evening’s underground hip-hop vibe and the lovely Mandy Mayhem closed out the opening sets, building anticipation for ICP.

By the time Insane Clown Posse took the stage, Franklin Music Hall was in a whole different gear. Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope have worked for years to build a performance style that mixes theatrical shock with dark humor, aggressive beats and an almost carnival-like sense of chaos. They’re loud unpredictable celebrations built around audience participation and shared identity (the Juggalos).

That connection is ICP’s greatest strength. Beneath the face paint, outrageous imagery and horror lyrics there is fan culture — belonging and self-expression. For longtime followers this ICP concert wasn’t just a chance to hear songs they know; it was a chance to reconnect with a community that has always been outside of mainstream culture. Ultimately it was a night for underground music, outrageous performances and the unbreakable bond Insane Clown Posse has with their fans.

Wakko the Kidd, Tierre Diaz and Mandy Mayhem got things started but ICP were still the stars of the show — bringing the unmistakable spirit of Dark Carnival to Philly. Juggalos had another chance to gather, let loose and embrace their unique identities.
